Response to Mary Ann Duttons Domestic Violence

Dutton endeavors to explain how Battered Women's Syndrome works. Symbolic Interactionism Theory is one of the three theories that I used to identify what happens in this situation. Symbolic Interactionism works with the micro level, how people interpret reality, and their attitudes and meanings behind their actions. The theory also addresses symbols and world views. All of these factors play a huge role in how and why battered women behave the way they do. Of course each individual behaves differently based on these factors, but there are many similarities between most instances of Battered Women's Syndrome.

The symbols that stand out to me are the perhaps what a woman sees when she looks law enforcement, a women's shelter, her children, her wedding band, her own face in the mirror after a violent episode. What do they mean to her? What do they symbolize? Perhaps a system that has or will fail her, a place that would be embarrassing to be seen in, someone she loves and must protect at any cost, a commitment, the repercussion of a perceived "failing". These are just some symbols and one of the myriad of possible meanings they may have for her.

The way the world views a battered woman who goes back to her abuser time after time is also an important factor. How does the world collectively think they would have handled the situation? You hear many people ask the question, "Why didn't she just leave him?" This shows the lack of understanding of the complexities that surround the issue. There are no easy answers.

What really struck me is the woman's interpretation of reality. Her reality is splintered and broken each time she is abused in any way. The coping mechanisms that a human being will put into place is astounding, especially when children, family, or friends are threatened. Reality is interpreted so many different ways. It is structured by many factors including childhood experiences, socioeconomic status, and perceptions of self and others.

The meanings behind a battered women's actions, meaning behind the actions of the abuser, meanings behind the legal system, meaning of the world's reactions to this situation are as varied and diverse as the people themselves. There are patterns to be sure. The power wielded by the actions of an abuser, the lack of power of the victim, and the meanings of all the legal actions taken are just a few of the factors we could address.

I must admit my bias as I address this issue. Sadly I'm sure that I'm not unique. I see this through the memories of my childhood wondering "Why doesn't Mom leave him? Why does she let him treat her that way? Why does she let him do this to me and my brothers?" Thankfully she did finally leave him and I'm truly grateful for that.
